Surah Al Qadr

Tajweed study of Surah Al Qadr with proper pronunciation and recitation rules.

Note: This content is for Primary 5 (Standard 5) Ulum subject in primary school, Malaysia.

Arabic: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Translation: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Power (97:1)

Arabic: إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ ١

Translation: Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory.

  • إِنَّا (inna) - Idgham maal ghunnah - The noon sakinah meets alif, with ghunnah held for 2 counts
  • أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ (anzalnahu) - Ikhfa - The noon sakinah before ز (za) is hidden/concealed with ghunnah for 2 counts. Za (ز) is one of the 15 letters of Ikhfa.

Arabic: وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ ٢

Translation: And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?

Arabic: تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍۢ ٤

Translation: That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter.

  • ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ (al-malaikah) - Madd Wajib Muttasil - Hamzah meets alif in the same word, must be held for 4 or 5 counts
  • وَٱلرُّوحُ (warruh) - Idgham Shamsiyyah - The lam in ٱلْ assimilates into the ر of ٱلرُّوحُ. The lam is not pronounced; instead, the ra is emphasized with shaddah.

Arabic: سَلَـٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ ٥

Translation: It is all peace until the break of dawn.

Tajweed Rules - Quick Reference Guide

1. Idgham with Ghunnah | الإدغام بغنة

What to do: Merge noon sakinah (نْ) or tanween into the next letter with a nasal sound held for 2 counts.

Letters involved (4 letters): ي (Ya), ن (Noon), م (Meem), و (Waw)

2. Ikhfa | الإخفاء

What to do: Hide noon sakinah (نْ) or tanween with a nasal sound held for 2 counts.

Letters involved (15 letters): ص, ذ, ث, ك, ج, ش, ق, س, د, ط, ز, ف, ت, ض, ظ

3. Qalqalah | القلقلة

What to do: Produce a bouncing echo sound when the letter has sukoon, especially when stopping.

Letters involved (5 letters): ق (Qaf), ط (Ta), ب (Ba), ج (Jeem), د (Dal)

4. Ra Tafkheem | را تفخيم

What to do: Make the ر sound thick/heavy by raising the back of tongue.

When to apply: Ra has Fathah (رَ), Ra has Dammah (رُ), Ra has Sukoon after Fathah or Dammah

Letter involved: ر (Ra)

5. Ra Tarqeeq | را ترقيق

What to do: Make the ر sound thin/light by keeping tongue flat.

When to apply: Ra has Kasrah (رِ), Ra has Sukoon after Kasrah, Ra comes after ي sakinah

Letter involved: ر (Ra)

6. Madd Wajib Muttasil | مد واجب متصل

What to do: Stretch the sound for 4-5 counts when a madd letter is followed by hamzah in the same word.

Madd letters (3 letters): ا (Alif - after Fathah), و (Waw - after Dammah with sukoon), ي (Ya - after Kasrah with sukoon)

7. Madd Jaiz Munfasil | مد جائز منفصل

What to do: Stretch the sound for 2, 4, or 6 counts when a madd letter is followed by hamzah in the next word.

Madd letters (3 letters): ا (Alif - after Fathah), و (Waw - after Dammah with sukoon), ي (Ya - after Kasrah with sukoon)

8. Idgham Shamsiyyah | الإدغام الشمسية

What to do: Don't pronounce the lam (ل) in ال. Instead, double the next letter with shaddah.

Sun letters (14 letters): ت, ث, د, ذ, ر, ز, س, ش, ص, ض, ط, ظ, ن, ل

9. Ghunnah | الغنة

What to do: Produce a nasal sound from the nose, held for 2 counts.

When it appears: Noon with shaddah (نّ), Meem with shaddah (مّ), During Idgham with Ghunnah, During Ikhfa
